Beagle rescued from euthanasia shows his appreciation to new dad

It’s so important to adopt dogs to give them a second chance at a forever home. Shenley Huston Kirk definitely stands by this theory when she spotted a gorgeous dog called Gregory on the euthanasia list at the Franklin County Shelter and Adoption Center in Ohio.

This gorgeous beagle had been found as a stray in Obetz, Ohio. Most likely he’d been abandoned by his owners. Thankfully, he appeared to be in perfect health apart from one problem. During Gregory’s health and behaviour assessment, his heartworm test came up positive.

Though this gorgeous 2-year-old pup was full of life and friendliness, his medical condition was a problem. The treatment would cost $400 according to the shelter. Because of this, Gregory was listed as “rescue only” on their page. If Gregory wasn’t rescued from the shelter by May 3rd, he would be euthanised.

Luckily for this beagle, Kirk and her husband Joe are the founders of Hound Rescue and Sanctuary. They weren’t going to let this little dog go. They never thought the dog would fully understand what’s going on or thank them… but boy were they wrong.

“My husband took the day off work to drive to the shelter, while I stayed home to take care of the other rescue dogs,” Kirk said.

“On the way back home, he decided he was going to take a couple selfies of our new rescue, which I got after him a little bit for since he’s not supposed to take pictures while driving — but considering the photos he captured I couldn’t complain too much.”

Throughout the whole car journey, Gregory sat as close as possible to Joe, hugging him all the way home.

“[Joe] sent me three photos, and in the last one, little Gregory had leaned his head over, as if to say, ‘You saved my life. I knew I was going to die at that shelter, but you saved me today, and just the look in his eyes — the thankfulness, the appreciation and the love of this little dog — it’s as if he knows his life has been saved.”

Gregory is finishing his month-long antibiotics treatment and beginning his heartworm medicine. He’s learning the basic commands such as ‘sit and stay’ and he’s already house-trained. “He’s very laid-back, very happy-go-lucky, and his favourite thing to do is get lots of love from his people,” added Kirk.

Though nobody knows what Gregory’s life was like before his rescue, for a lot of beagles and hounds in the rural and southern Ohio areas, life can be tough. The assumption of that they’re just hunting dogs that smell and are too loud is a common misconception.

Joe and Kirk know the true love these beagles have, especially one like Gregory. They’re just waiting for that special person to give him a forever home.
